Overwhelmed by goal-setting for the new year? Do this instead!

Ready to start the new year off with a bang, but New Year's resolutions don't feel like the right idea? These 2 steps will help you even if goal-setting isn't your thing.

The reality is, goals are amazing and important.  But sometimes it can also feel overwhelming to try to put together a plan to achieve things that you have a hard time really even imagining are possible for yourself. Start with a review of 2021 so that you can celebrate, learn, and adjust, and then envision what you want your life to look like.

If you have been working through the “Best Year Ever” 5-day challenge, you've likely already at least started on these two exercises. And if you didn’t join in, no worries - you can still get the info delivered over a 5 day period - starting as soon as you register.

Even if you didn’t work through the whole goal-setting plan, here’s what I hope you’ll take the time to do:

1. Fill out the Four Helpful Lists (click here for the printable).

This will help you see the following four things very clearly and easily.  One of my business coaches, Christy Wright, introduced me to this. It's actually a tool that has been around for a long time, but I hadn't seen it before.  I love the simplicity of it and am applying it to more than just my business. It's a great way to review after any event or project, family or otherwise, while it's still fresh in your mind.

  • What went right? - Amplify - Do more of that.
  • What went wrong? - Fix it - What do you need to change?
  • What’s confusing? - Clarify it. Make it simpler, easier, more effective.
  • What’s missing? - Add it.

We don’t spend nearly enough time focusing on what goes right in our lives.  We’re often so busy that we just gloss over it and move on to the next thing. But remember, what we focus on grows.  So when we take time to celebrate our wins, we subconsciously start looking for (and attracting) more wins.

2. Do the vision casting exercise: Design your ideal life.

The overall idea is this - what do you want your life to look and feel like in the future? Even if it feels unrealistic or unattainable - how would you like it to be? Just envisioning that can change things - especially if you write it down and revisit it periodically.

  • If I think about my best life, here's how it would be in terms of...
    • Personal Life, Home, and Family
    • Career, Work, and Business Life
    • Health and Well-being
    • Finances
    • Community, Friendships
    • Spiritual and Learning
    • Write anything else that feels important to mention here.
  • What if there were no obstacles? Let yourself dream big here.  This isn’t a reality-based exercise - no “yeah-buts” allowed.
  • Who do you need to BE to achieve this?
    • I need to be someone who is….
  • If there was one important CHANGE you could make over the next 3 months, what would it be?

Once you have done these two things and have a simplified view of 2021 and a vision of what you want life to look like moving forward, make sure to keep them at the forefront of your mind.

  • Set reminders on your phone.
  • Write out your vision, or keywords from it, and keep it in a prominent place.
  • Schedule an appointment with yourself, ideally weekly, to re-read your vision and "four helpful lists" page. Reviewing this regularly keeps you focused on what you want, and lets you course correct if you start to veer too far off your desired path.
  • While you've got your phone and calendar out, schedule a little bit of time for something that you enjoy.  It can be as little as five minutes - and free - but intentionally take time to do something just for you.  And yes, it's fine if that five minutes is spent doing nothing - with zero guilt or regret!
  • If you want to dig deeper into your dreams and goals, including figuring out how to put yourself on your list of most important things to take care of, make sure you're signed up for the “Best Year Ever” 5-day challenge.

Till next time, take a deep breath or two, and never stop becoming the best version of YOU!

Love and Blessings, Jenny
